How is a Mesquite property tax bill built?
The appraisal district sets your home's value each year, and each taxing unit applies its rate per $100 of taxable value after exemptions. Most of Mesquite is in Dallas County and uses the Dallas Central Appraisal District.
Homes on the Kaufman County side use the Kaufman County appraisal district and different county units, so look up those addresses there.

Which exemptions lower a Mesquite tax bill?
File for the residence homestead exemption once the home is your principal residence. School districts must exempt $140,000 of a homestead's value, and owners 65 or older or disabled get another $60,000 school exemption.
In 2025, the City of Mesquite offered no percentage homestead exemption but did offer $65,000 for owners 65 or older and $15,000 for disabled owners. Dallas County, Parkland Hospital and Dallas College offered 20% plus $100,000 for those owners.
After a homestead qualifies, its appraised value for taxes cannot rise more than 10% a year, starting the next tax year. The general filing deadline is before May 1.

How do PIDs, MUDs and protests work in Mesquite?
Mesquite has four public improvement districts: Heartland Town Center, Iron Horse, Polo Ridge Ranch and Solterra. Owners inside them pay an assessment in addition to property taxes, and the city's PID administrator, P3Works, can explain the installments.
Sellers must give written notice of a PID or MUD before you sign. Each spring the appraisal district mails value notices, and you can protest by May 15 or 30 days after the notice was mailed, whichever is later.
